Trollstigen, The Troll’s Path in Norway

There are 18 national tourist routes in Norway. Each one is more beautiful than the other. The Trollstigen National Tourist Route is one of them. It’s a 106 km road between Valldal and Åndalsnes. The road twists through 11 hairpin bends as it climbs up 858 m above sea level. At the top, there is a viewpoint, a restaurant, and a museum. On the way up you will cross a little stone bridge through the Stigfossen waterfall.

It’s a very narrow two-way road. I confess I held my breath every time a car passed by. There was no space for the car to stop on the way up. I did my best taking pictures from the passenger seat. Although the weather was not in my favor that day, I still managed to have a great time and take great pictures. It was pretty cold up there. There was snow on the ground even though it was the middle of June.

I loved the idea of tourist routes. The recipe for a great road trip is the mix of beautiful Norwegian landscape, bold modern architecture, and local artwork. The Trollstigen has amazing viewpoints for the delight of the photographers, hiking trails for the adventurous, and restaurants and cafes for the ones wanting to get a taste of the local food.

You can organize your trip at the Trollstigen national tourist route website. To get the most of the experience, it’s necessary to rent a car. That way you can enjoy freedom and do things at your on pace. I chose Ålesund as my base city to explore the area. It allowed me to make day trips to Trollstigen, Geiranger Fjord, and Atlantic Ocean Road.

The road is closed in winter. Normally it closes in October and opens in late May or early June. To know more about this road and others visit the national tourist routes website.
