Rotterdam is always innovating in architecture. This time they surprised everyone with their new futuristic psychedelic Markthal (Market Hall). The new food walhalla of the Netherlands was opened in October 1 2014.
Rotterdam Markthal building is a huge residential arch designed to house the market under it. The arch itself has 228 apartments. Inside, a huge mural with pictures of fruits, vegetables and flowers covers the vast 120 m long and 40 m high arch. The space accommodates a total of 100 fresh food stalls and 8 restaurants, with parking for 1,200 cars below it.
The building is really impressive. Last year when I visited the city I passed by this curious structure while it was in construction. This year when I came back to Netherlands and discovered it was already finished I had to see for myself.,
There was a competition to choose the best design for the new market. The winner was MVRDV architectural office. They are the leaders of the wave of “Superdutch” architects with many projects around the world. They are not stopping here, for 2017 they have another project coming. A new building will the constructed in addition to the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the Public Art Depot MBVB. I can’t wait to see!
