Every year thousands of people gather around the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to see the floating Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is assembled at the end of November. The giant structure is inaugurated with a firework display during an event featuring lights and musical performances.
The tree is 85 m high and weighs more than 540 tonnes. It is the world highest floating Christmas tree registered by the Guinness World Records. Because the tree is assembled over a ferry boat, it can move around. The tree is repositioned at various points of the pond. Following the traditions of the Catholic Church the tree is dismantled on January 6.
If you wish to visit be prepared to deal with the crowds. It’s best to arrive before the end of the afternoon and watch the sunset at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. As soon as the night falls hundreds of people start to arrive.
